Energy Transition, Climate Risks, and Circular Economy: A Global Urgency and Integrated Solutions

The global energy system is facing a polycrisis, marked by consecutive and escalating geopolitical crises that have plunged global oil and gas markets into turmoil [Source 14]. In this context, energy transition, climate risk mitigation, and the adoption of the circular economy emerge as essential pillars for planetary resilience and sustainability.
The transition to cleaner energy sources is progressing, although obstacles remain. In Poland, the Baltic Power offshore wind farm, the country's first, has started injecting electricity into the national grid. This project, developed by ORLEN and Northland Power, plans for the installation of 76 turbines of 15 MW each for a total capacity of 1.2 GW [Source 4]. In South Africa, the Siyanda Bakgatla platinum mine has concluded an agreement with the energy company NOA for the supply of 288 GWh of renewable energy per year, sourced from wind, solar, and battery storage [Source 16]. These initiatives illustrate the industrial sector's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. Concurrently, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has secured funding for 43 projects aimed at developing cutting-edge climate solutions in the cooling sector [Source 6]. However, the deployment of clean energy in the United States is hampered by bureaucracy [Source 14]. Scientific studies also highlight the challenges and opportunities of sustainable energy transition in Indonesia [Source 18], the uneven socio-environmental returns of renewable electricity contracts for difference in the United Kingdom [Source 21], and energy justice in Nigerian policy frameworks [Source 22]. Forecasts from Solcast, a DNV company, indicate a strengthening El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to lead to above-normal solar irradiance for the second half of 2026 across much of Europe, Southeast Asia, northern South America, and eastern Australia, with the strongest model agreement in Southeast Asia [Source 15].
Climate risks, meanwhile, are manifesting with increasing intensity. Spain was hit by a swift and large-scale fire in Andalusia, causing the death of at least 12 people, including four Britons, and leaving 23 missing. Eight people were also injured, and approximately 500 firefighters were mobilized to contain the blaze, which forced the evacuation of 600 people [Source 7, Source 12]. In France, the Morbihan department is severely affected by intense drought, leading to a proliferation of crop and forest fires, often triggered by agricultural machinery during harvests. These fires devastate hectares of crops, threaten homes and livestock, and put pressure on firefighters, farmers, and residents [Source 8]. In response to the drought, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the Government of South Sudan have activated the country's first-ever anticipatory action plan, protecting over 65,000 people in Budi and Kapoeta North counties from food insecurity [Source 9]. Furthermore, Super Typhoon Bavi, comparable in size to France, is approaching the coasts of Taiwan, Japan, and China, leading to significant precautionary measures, including stocking provisions, closing businesses, and the return of hundreds of fishing boats to ports [Source 11]. Scientific research continues to explore the impacts of climate change, such as asymmetric patterns of soil carbon mineralization during thaw landslide recovery [Source 17].
The circular economy offers concrete solutions to mitigate environmental impact and strengthen resilience. In Italy, Assoambiente, the association of urban hygiene and circular economy companies, has instituted the Pimby Green 2026 award to recognize innovative and sustainable projects that promote innovation, the circular economy, and dialogue [Source 2]. In the field of materials, Kao Corp. has developed DANOX RAP-400, a new plant-derived asphalt recycling agent. This product rejuvenates recycled asphalt pavement (RAP), improves pavement durability, and reduces environmental impact, thus addressing the challenges of aging asphalt [Source 5]. However, major challenges remain, particularly the recycling of end-of-life solar modules, which proves unviable if material diversity is not considered, according to UNSW researchers [Source 3]. On the political and commercial front, the European Commission announced the first high-level intergovernmental dialogue between South Africa and the EU to advance their Clean Trade and Investment Partnership (CTIP), aiming to strengthen clean supply chains and support investments [Source 13]. The United Arab Emirates stands out at the top of the Arab world in the 2026 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), which evaluates countries on 47 performance indicators grouped into 12 categories and three overarching policy objectives [Source 10]. Environmental management strategies are also being studied in mining areas [Source 19] and conceptual frameworks for carbon emission accounting are being applied [Source 20].
In summary, the convergence of efforts in energy transition, proactive climate risk management, and the integration of circular economy principles are imperative. Local initiatives and international partnerships demonstrate growing awareness, but the scale of the challenges demands accelerated and increased coordination of global actions to build a more sustainable and resilient future.
