Between Climate Emergency and Accelerated Energy Transition: A Global Assessment

Faced with this emergency, the energy transition is accelerating with massive investments in solar and wind power, technological innovations like flexible heat pumps, and policies aimed at electrifying the economy, although challenges persist with fossil fuel subsidies and continued exploration.
June 2026 marked a significant turning point in the perception and management of global climate and energy challenges. According to Copernicus, June 2026 was the second warmest June globally and the warmest ever recorded in Western Europe, following an intense heatwave from June 15 to 30, which led to temperature records in France [Source 2]. This situation highlights the urgency of adapting infrastructure and accelerating the transition to more sustainable energy sources.
The impacts of heatwaves have become a major concern. In France, reactor No. 2 of the Golfech nuclear power plant was shut down due to the rising temperature of the Garonne River, approaching 28°C, in accordance with a 2006 environmental decree.
